Post Conference Activities

Cardiac Rhythm Review

Review the syllabus and determine which rhythms the students need to learn. It is important to remember students are often only expected to know basic cardiac rhythms and basic treatments for those rhythms. Game mode includes heart blocks which may be too advanced for some learners. I place a paper over the bottom of the screen that identifies each rhythm. I use this resource for students mostly in ‘learn’ mode using basic rhythms such as SR, ST, SB, SVT, asystole, PVCs, PACs, VT, afib and aflutter. You can start and stop the ECG strip in learn and game modes

Environmental Rounds “I SPY”

Students can participate in environmental safety reviews of the unit. Provide two students with the hospital’s unit based JCAHO checklist for environmental readiness. I had my students do this in the afternoon when things were more ‘quiet’ on the unit and the morning rush was over.

  1. Provide student with environmental checklist
  2. Allow students to go in pairs to complete the checklist
  3. Allow the students to discuss their findings with you directly and report or rectify the deficit
  4. Have the pair of students report their findings and what they did to fix the problems identified.
  5. Remember to have the students report the positive findings (What went well?)
