…you are excited that you finally earned your MSN. You just landed your first nursing clinical job and can’t wait to start! You’ve been a preceptor for new grads and have gotten good feedback. How hard can it be teaching nursing students? You’re given an orientation from the college or university that might include housekeeping things like payroll, human resource information, general syllabus and expectations as a clinical instructor. You then discover you will have 6-8 clinical students to teach this semester. WHAT?! 8?! They tell you to swing by the unit you are assigned and get acclimated to the floor with a brief orientation with a nurse on the unit you will be assigned. Okay, then what? How do I manage 6-8 wide-eyed nursing students who expect me to know how to keep them all learning, occupied and safe throughout the day? I’ve seen other instructors on the units and I know what I don’t want to see. Students hanging around in pairs, threes or fours or students completely unaware that they are taking up every computer at the nurses station instead of being in the room with their patient. Nope, not my students! But where do I learn how to practically organize my day, ensure they are all providing safe care and pass meds with students who likely either never passed them before or have only done this a few times in their life. What do you do? You phone a friend…you search for some sort of mentor, someone who seems to have it all together to help you.
If this sounds like you, you are not alone. Almost every clinical instructor whom I’ve spoken to has wished they felt more prepared for the ‘boots on the ground’ clinical experience. They wish they could have shadowed a seasoned nursing instructor who showed them how to choose assignments, watched a medication pass with a student, and managed to somehow keep 8 students OFF the computers and in with their patients performing assessments, patient care and just communicating with their patients. It can be a juggling act and most of us get the hang of it over time. But why should we need to stumble and learn the hard way, when others have experience that they can share? In the end, the students benefit the most from more experienced instructors who have learned how to navigate the various ways to keep the students learning and engaged throughout the clinical day.

This was my experience being a new clinical instructor, fortunately, my employer did give me a lot of tools and websites to use for onboarding and training like Nurse Tim and ATI for instructors. These trainings helped immensely on how to bring classroom and tie it into clinical yet most of my learning of what to do with my students during clinical was just by trial and error. I did it for six months and my students are off to their next semester and I am off to a new opportunity as a full-time clinical instructor elsewhere. I still have so much to learn about being a clinical instructor and I’m glad to have this resource!
That is great, Shavon! The school I started with was very organized and got me off to a good start too. The one main thing I wish was part of my MSN experience was to shadow a nursing clinical instructor. I am so glad you posted your experience. I have to look into Nurse Tim and I’d love to hear about what you mean by the information you mentioned about ATI for instructors.
When I first started teaching clinical, I was so nervous! Like you mentioned Sherri, I had all these students staring at me and I was responsible for them. I did not have any formal orientation. My orientation was an online (Zoom) training and it was all Greek to me. Finishing up my fourth clinical now, I feel better about my skills as a clinical instructor. I still have more to learn and grow but it can be very daunting in the beginning.
Yes, plus I think we have all these expectations of ourselves when we first start. We want the experience to be amazing for our students. I think once we learn a rhythm and get a plan together for how we tackle our day, it is A LOT easier to navigate. Now after teaching clinical since 2017, I am really honing in on critical thinking and picking apart the patient’s chart with the student. I work a lot on prioritization and what the students will do and assess in the morning. In the beginning I use to try to fit too much in so the students had the chance to do multiple med passes, but I learned they need the critical thinking piece for ‘putting it all together’.
